Rheumatologist: joints hurt due to lifestyle changes

According to rheumatologist Irina Svintsitskaya, the occurrence of osteoarthritis is influenced by several factors, and one of them is excess weight.

Osteoarthritis is now the most a common disease of the musculoskeletal system.

“This applies mainly to large joints, but small ones can also be involved in the pathological process,” the doctor said on the St. Petersburg TV channel.

Russians have become complain more often of knee pain. This is due, the doctor emphasized, to the fact that lifestyle has changed – there are more and more overweight patients, the load on the joints has increased.

Other factors in the occurrence of osteoarthritis include concomitant diseases, for example, gout, which disrupts the metabolism of cartilage. Genetics also influence the appearance of osteoarthritis.

The specialist noted that osteoarthritis “gets younger”, and was previously considered an age-related disease.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease, it is characterized by damage to cartilage tissue and changes in the joints. Typical signs of osteoarthritis:

  • Pain. It can be noticeable when moving or putting stress on the joint, and also after a long period of rest.
  • Rigidity of the joint, especially after waking up or a long period of rest.
  • Swelling caused by inflammation and fluid accumulation
  • Limited mobility.
  • Crunching caused by wear of cartilage and changes in joint fluid.
  • Deformation of the joint.
  • Fatigue. Patients with osteoarthritis complain of fatigue even after little physical activity.
