Pineapple extract may help treat dementia
Pineapple extract may help fight Alzheimer's disease, scientists in India have found. This conclusion is supported by animal studies.

Extract from the stem of pineapple, as shown by a study by scientists from Lovely Professional University in Punjab, has the potential to improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease – an incurable neurodegenerative disease, accompanied by persistent memory loss due to increased levels of beta-amyloid protein in the brain. Victims of dementia gradually lose their memory and independence, and in the last stages they are no longer able to respond to surrounding events, maintain a conversation and eat food on their own.

Alzheimer's disease is incurable, there are no means even to slow down its development. And now Indian scientists have found that the compound bromelain can positively influence some behavioral symptoms in mice with a specific type of Alzheimer's disease. And all this is confirmed by the results of biochemical and histological studies of tissues under a microscope.

Biochemical studies included the evaluation of the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that regulates neurotransmission and antioxidant parameters in the brain of mice. Under the influence of bromelain, they improved significantly. Improvements in the levels of enzymes beta-secretase, beta-amyloid, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 were also noted after exposure to bromelain on the brain.
