Gastroenterologist Dilyara Lebedeva: sugar causes inflammation, which causes acne

Gastroenterologist Dilyara Lebedeva named three nutritional factors that negatively affect the condition of the skin. She wrote about this on her blog.

Added sugar comes first. There is especially a lot of it in soda, store-bought juices, and sweets.

—Sugar is a holiday for pathogenic bacteria in our intestines, which, having had fun, provoke inflammatory processes. And since the condition of the intestines directly affects the skin, acne becomes a frequent guest, the specialist noted.

She recommends eliminating sugar from the diet altogether.

In second place is milk, which can cause inflammation leading to acne. It has a particularly negative effect on people with lactose intolerance.

The third place in terms of “harmfulness” was taken by gluten.

— If you have a food intolerance to gluten, this can cause not only discomfort in stomach, but also skin rashes,” Lebedeva wrote.

She advised to at least temporarily exclude bread, rolls, pasta from the diet and see how the skin changes.

What doctors say about the dangers of sugar:

Sweets lead to the development of insulin resistance, which can cause the development of type 2 diabetes.

Sugar is empty calories that carry little or no nutrients substances. Too much sugar in the diet leads to overweight and obesity, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Sugar can have an impact on your mood and energy. After eating a lot of sweets, we experience spikes in energy and mood, but then a crash follows, which causes fatigue and irritability.

If you want to reduce your sugar intake, there are several alternative options.

  • Use fresh or frozen fruit to add sweetness to your meals and drinks.
  • Honey contains beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants and flavonoids.
  • Agave syrup, maple syrup, and stevia can be added to baked goods, drinks, and other foods.
  • Spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, and cardamom.
  • Artificial sweeteners.
