Oncologist Elizaveta Vasilyeva: with chronic pancreatitis, you are more likely to get pancreatic cancer.
Oncologist Vasilyeva said that this type Cancer is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable cancer diseases. In terms of mortality, pancreatic cancer is in third place.
“This is one of the few types of cancer that is very difficult to detect in the early stages due to the complete absence of symptoms. In some cases, the symptoms of pancreatic cancer can be cleverly disguised as other diseases,” Vasilyeva noted in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru.
The oncologist clarified how high the risk of pancreatic cancer is with pancreatitis, which means inflammation of the pancreas. The doctor said that chronic pancreatitis is one of the factors that, through their influence on the body, contribute to the appearance of tumors – this is confirmed by many studies. But the likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer becomes especially significant in the case of hereditary pancreatitis.
“The long-term course of pancreatitis increases the risk of developing cancer by 25 times, and hereditary pancreatitis by 70 times,” said Elizaveta Vasilyeva.
In addition, the doctor added, the following circumstances increase the risk of suffering from pancreatic cancer:
- Smoking;
- Alcohol abuse;
- Addiction to food with animal fat;
- The presence of diabetes mellitus (primarily long-standing, more than 10 years).
“Diabetes mellitus can also be an early symptom of pancreatic cancer,” – the oncologist drew attention.
