Doctor Andreeva: Your gut may be the key to good sleep

New study reveals 40 percent of people don't know that good gut health can improve their sleep quality.A new study also shows the opposite: getting enough sleep can support good gut health, but nearly one in three people don't know it.

A healthy gut produces melatonin, which is also known as the sleep hormone, but a study found that four out of 10 people, over 47 percent, are unaware of the link between gut health and melatonin.

“Melatonin has powerful antioxidant effects, and may also help protect gut health,” says GP Irina Andreeva, commenting on the study exclusively for MedicForum.

Scientists have called negative emotions the key to well-being

The study also found that summer in general doesn't do a great job on our sleep, with a staggering 83 percent saying they sleep less than the recommended seven to nine hours a night, and almost four in ten sleep only four to five hours on average.

When asked about the impact of sleep disturbances on daily life, more than half reported mood changes in family, partners or colleagues, and 40% said they could not work effectively.

Scientists said that the key to a successful marriage is a good dream

This study identifies various factors that can sabotage our sleep when temperatures rise, from hotter evenings and longer days to hay fever, noise and changes in daily routine. Our core body temperature peaks at 5:00 pm and needs to drop one to two degrees in order to fall asleep, so it's important to try to cool down before bed.

“A good night's sleep can positively affect your gut microbiota, and there are many easy ways to take care of it in warm weather. Practical steps to improve sleep include a healthy dietrich in whole grains, vegetables, healthy fats and lean proteins.”
