Proctologist Maslennikov on the dangers of toilet paper: it causes inflammation, increases the risk of anal fissures

paper
Surgeon, proctologist, oncologist, Dmitry Maslennikov said that improper hygiene of the anal area can lead to proctological diseases, and above all – due to the abuse of toilet paper.

—The fact is that toilet paper does not always provide sufficient cleansing of the anal area after defecation. Even after using it, particles of contaminants remain on the skin, which is fraught with the proliferation of bacteria, the doctor noted.

This provokes the development of inflammation. If the paper is hard and of poor quality, it provokes microtraumas. Add to this insufficient cleansing and you get the risk of developing infectious and inflammatory processes.

Cheap toilet paper can cause more serious damage to the mucous membrane, such as anal fissures. This disease significantly reduces the quality of life, can become chronic and lead to the need for surgical intervention.

In addition, there are studies that confirm the presence of potentially toxic compounds in paper. For example, bisphenol or perfluorinated organic compounds – PFAS.

Another fact – toilet paper often contains fragrances, fragrances and dyes. This can be dangerous due to irritation, allergic and skin reactions.

What is the alternative?

The doctor recommends washing – using a bidet, hygienic or regular shower. Wet toilet paper is acceptable – it has a special fiber structure and is less damaging to the mucous membranes.

Anal fissures are small tears or wounds in the anus. They can be very painful and cause discomfort. Symptoms:

1. One of the main symptoms of anal fissures is acute pain in the anus. The pain may be worse during or after bowel movements, as well as when sitting or moving.

2. With anal fissures, slight bleeding may occur after bowel movements. Blood is usually bright and may be visible on toilet paper or on the surface of stool.

3. Anal fissures cause itching and irritation around the anus. This is due to injured skin and constant contact with feces.

4. In some cases, anal fissures cause spasms or contractions of the muscles around the anus, which can worsen the pain and impede healing.
