Malysheva and Galperin: a person will not become a drug addict after general anesthesia, the brain is completely turned off and does not get pleasure

General anesthesia does not cause drug addiction; this is impossible in principle, since the brain is turned off and does not receive the pleasure that prohibited substances could cause.
< Doctor and TV presenter Elena Malysheva and anesthesiologist Mark Galperin spoke about this in the program “Live Healthy!” on Channel One.  If a person has taken illegal substances, he may develop a severe addiction after the first dose. But for this you need to be conscious, aware of what you are doing. General anesthesia is an artificially induced state similar to deep sleep, in which all sensations are suppressed, consciousness is turned off and the muscles of the body are relaxed. It is supported by an anesthesiologist through the administration of certain medications. General anesthesia is used during operations and ensures the comfort of the patient and the safety of medical personnel. “But since as a result of anesthesia, that is, general anesthesia, your brain is turned off, it will not be subject to euphoria, and therefore there will be no addiction and dependence on the opioid painkillers that we use during anesthesia,” Halperin noted.

Under anesthesia, a person does not feel anything, added Malysheva.

Another famous doctor and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov previously dispelled myths about anesthesia. He reassured those who believe that anesthesia has an extremely negative effect on health – it impairs memory and even shortens life.

— Is it true that every anesthesia shortens life by several years? No that's not true. But there are consequences after recovering from anesthesia, he said on the air of the show “About the Most Important Thing” on the Russia 1 channel.

Let us recall the possible consequences of general anesthesia:

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Chills and trembling.
  • Sore throat.
  • Headache
  • Consciousness after anesthesia.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Injuries to lips, gums and teeth.
