According to Doctor of Medical Sciences Alexey Bereznikov, an unprepared body can react to a cold shower or immersion in cold water extremely negatively.

The doctor emphasized that In evidence-based medicine, the common belief about the benefits of cold showers is considered unfounded. At the same time, many believe that water procedures in cold water strengthen the cardiovascular system.

However, the body should not be exposed to extreme temperatures without preparation, especially immersion in ice water.

“Cold shock may develop, which can be fatal,” the doctor warned.

Hardening is useful, but this must be done gradually and for a long time, reducing the temperature of the water by one or two degrees.

“Otherwise we will get the opposite effect: hypothermia reduces immunity, can provoke the development of infectious diseases, lead to inflammation of muscles and joints,” the doctor noted.

People with cardiac diseases can only harden after consulting a doctor: cold water causes a spasm of the capillaries, which can cause an increase in pressure.

Pathophysiologist Sergei Stepanov previously noted that for people with chronic diseases “it is not recommended to take a cold shower in any form.” ”  Especially for diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and motor systems. After 50 years, dousing with cold water and other hardening activities, according to him, should be performed with great caution, and after 70, should not be practiced at all.
