Therapist Alexey Khukhrev pointed out the connection between persistent hiccups and a number of dangerous diseases.

Therapist Khukhrev warned in an interview that long-term hiccups are often a marker of serious disorders.

“If hiccups continue for more than six hours, this is already called persistent or persistent hiccups, and in 93% of cases this indicates something serious,” the doctor said in an interview with Sputnik radio.
What serious pathologies can cause persistent hiccups:

  • Neoplasms in the larynx;
  • Neoplasms in the thyroid gland;
  • Aortic aneurysm;
  • Asthma;
  • Hepatitis;
  • Hyperglycemia in diabetes.

“Hiccups can also be caused by a tumor or stomach ulcer, appendicitis, inflammation of the gallbladder, pancreas, hepatitis and even myocardial infarction,” added Khukhrev.
The therapist advised that you should definitely contact a specialist if you experience persistent hiccups that the usual remedies do not help get rid of. The longer the hiccups continue, the more serious the illness that caused it may turn out to be, the expert emphasized.

What causes short-term hiccups:

  • Overeating;
  • Severe going from hot to cold;
  • Stress;
  • Severe fear;
  • Alcohol consumption;
  • Irritation of the vagus nerve.
