Some people may experience hair loss as a result of taking statins.
Statins are used to lower cholesterol levels. When used correctly, this means that they may ultimately reduce the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. But like all drugs, there are side effects to be aware of.
“Most people who take statins tolerate them very well. But some people have side effects. Hair loss is a less common side effect of medications,” family doctor Tatyana Zakharova says specifically for MedicForum.
Other less common side effects are:
- Nausea
- Prickling sensations such as prickling, numbness, or tingling in the skin
- Inflammation of the liver
- Inflammation of the pancreas, which can cause abdominal pain
- Skin problems, such as rashes or acne
- Sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction or low sex drive.
More common side effects may include muscle pain, soreness or weakness, abdominal cramps or pain, and headaches.

- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting

- Diarrhea
