However, if you also go to bed in socks for extra warmth, a new study suggests you wear a new pair. Unfortunately, studies show that your socks may contain the same bacteria found in fecal excretions.

“A new study of smears has shown that if you go to bed in dirty socks, unpleasant bacteria can get on the sheets. For analysis, swabs were taken from the socks of different people who were worn from 7 am to 11 pm,” says therapist Irina Andreeva especially for MedicalForum.

Everyone wore the same socks when wearing shoes, playing sports and going about their normal daily activities. After analyzing these smears, the researchers found that half of the socks contained the same bacteria commonly found in cockroaches and excrement.

“Bacteria known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa can infect your respiratory and urinary tracts. The microorganisms are mainly dangerous for those who have health problems.”
Pseudomonas infection only poses a threat to those who are immunocompromised, such as people with diabetes, cystic fibrosis, burns, cancer, organ transplant recipients and newborns.

Pseudomonas thrive in damp and humid environments, which makes your bed perfect for them. At night, the bed is warm and you sweat, so this is an ideal breeding ground for pathogens such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli.

“I would recommend going to bed in clean pajamas and a clean pair of socks – if you decide to wear socks in bed.”

However, don't give up socks in bed entirely, as evidence suggests they may be good for your sleep. Wearing socks warms your feet by causing blood to rush to your skin and blood vessels dilate to dissipate the heat.
