Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh: the “theory” that using chewing gum on an empty stomach causes gastritis is one of the common myths about this disease.

Gastroenterologist Kashukh explained in a commentary to Izvestia whether chewing gum on an empty stomach can cause gastritis. The doctor noted that this disease cannot occur due to the habit of chewing gum.

“The belief that the habit of chewing gum on an empty stomach increases the production of gastric juice and provokes gastritis is erroneous: in fact, this is not so,” the specialist shared her opinion.
Ekaterina Kashuk added that the danger of chewing gum is usually associated with its ability to stimulate the secretion of gastric juice. But in reality, people who chew it do not experience significant changes in the volume and acidity of gastric juice: it is not produced due to chewing gum in such quantities as to cause damage to the mucous membrane.

“Even prolonged chewing does not have a significant effect on the volume and acidity of gastric juice,” the doctor stated.
In turn, chewing gum after eating improves the protection of teeth from the development of caries. Chewing it for 20 minutes helps normalize acidity, which increases during meals and harms tooth enamel.
For some people, chewing gum for heartburn helps reduce the discomfort inherent in it.
