Dr. Salamatina said that leukocytes are blood cells responsible for the destruction of foreign cells and viruses – their level is associated with the activity of the immune system. Deviation from it can occur either upward or downward. Similar changes in the level of leukocytes occur against the background of various diseases.

“When the level of leukocytes increases or decreases, the diagnosis is made taking into account the ratio of different types of leukocytes: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes and monocytes,” Salamatina told Gazeta.Ru.
