Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh advised Russians not to use soda to treat heartburn.

Doctor Kashuh warned about the dangers of baking soda used as a remedy for heartburn. The doctor explained that soda can only provide short-term relief, but in the long term, its use can threaten a person with dangerous disorders. Their risk is increased due to the rebound effect that soda has, causing the stomach to produce more hydrochloric acid.

“Soda extinguishes the acid in the stomach with an alkali, but this effect does not last long – the body increases the production of hydrochloric acid to return the acidic environment . This releases carbon dioxide, which causes heartburn and bloating to occur with renewed vigor,” the doctor told the Doctor Peter portal.
Ekaterina Kashuk noted that concentrated soda solutions can cause severe irritation of the mucous membrane and cause serious harm to it. With frequent or constant irritation, there is a possibility of degeneration of its cells and the occurrence of cancer. The expert called the statement that soda can help people with cancer a myth.

The doctor also recalled that for some diseases the use of soda is strictly contraindicated. In particular, its use should be avoided in case of existing problems with the kidneys, liver, or heart.

Earlier, the portal MedikForum.ru wrote that baking foil contains substances leading to cancer.
