Therapist Timoschenko: numbness of the arms and legs after sleep may be a sign of atherosclerosis and diabetes

hands
Numbness in the hands and feet after waking up is usually explained by an uncomfortable posture during sleep. However, this may be explained by certain diseases, in particular vascular atherosclerosis.

As therapist Anastasia Timoschenko told NEWS.ru, regular anxiety from numbness in the arms and legs requires consultation with a neurologist. Sometimes a decrease in sensitivity in the legs in the morning indicates diabetic polyneuropathy.

— It more often manifests itself in the legs than in the arms, alcoholic neuropathy against the background of chronic intoxication is also often a worrying manifestation in the legs, — noted the doctor.

Often the cause of numbness can be vascular disorders, obliterating atherosclerosis, varicose veins, lack of vitamin B12.

Another possible cause is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a condition in which the nerves in the wrist are compressed, which can cause numbness and tingling in the hands. It often worsens at night, since during sleep the posture of the hands can contribute to compression of the nerves.

Other causes of numbness in the hands and feet after sleep:

Problems with the spine, such as a herniated disc or spondylosis, can compress nerves and cause numbness in the arms and legs. This may be worse after sleep when the muscles are relaxed.

What is polyneuropathy?

Polyneuropathy is a condition in which several nerves are damaged. Symptoms of polyneuropathy can vary depending on the cause and extent of nerve damage.

1. A common symptom of polyneuropathy is numbness and tingling in the extremities. This may be a sensation of “pins and needles” or “pins and needles”.

2. Polyneuropathy can cause weakness in the muscles, especially in the legs. This leads to difficulty walking.

3. Some people with polyneuropathy experience pain in their limbs. Acute or chronic, pain may be worse at night.

4. Nerve damage can lead to poor coordination. This is due to unsteadiness when walking or difficulty with precision movements.

5. Polyneuropathy can cause sensory impairment in the extremities. People experience a loss or change in sensitivity to temperature, pain or touch.
