Signs of Parkinson's disease can be seen in the eyes seven years before diagnosis

Scientists at University College London have reported that the early signs of Parkinson's disease can be identified in the retina.

Parkinson's disease is the name of a slowly developing pathology of the central nervous system. It is an incurable degenerative disease of the brain. It is accompanied by slowness of movement, tremors, rigidity, loss of balance and other serious complications.

According to a study published in the journal Neurology, artificial intelligence (AI) was trained to diagnose on the world's largest database of retinal images. Humans do not see these changes, they are available only to AI algorithms.

The algorithm draws attention to differences in the inner nuclear layer of the retina. The thickness of these layers, or rather, its changes, is associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

The model uses 3D scanning. It allows you to get a retinal incision in just a minute with detailing up to a thousandth of a millimeter. Next, the neural network detects changes and makes a prediction.

Parkinson's disease usually occurs in older patients. However, it is increasingly common in young people between 30 and 40 years of age. The causes of the disease are still not exactly known. Men get sick more often than women.

Signs of Parkinson's disease:

  • slowness of movement;
  • muscle stiffness;< /li>
  • rapid exhaustion of movements;
  • trembling of the limbs;
  • freezing with stomping in one place;
  • unsteady gait;
  • shuffling when walking;
  • the length of steps is shortened;
  • no synchronous hand movements when walking.

Insomnia and depression join. Treatment should be started as early as possible.

Early signs of Parkinson's disease:

  • Manifestations of the disease are noticeable on one side.
  • Tremor in the hands occurs with excitement.
  • Bouts of spontaneously appearing fatigue and sleep disturbances.
