Nutritionist Bessonova: Millet interferes with iodine absorption and is not recommended for thyroid diseases

Nutritionist Marina Bessonova spoke about four types of cereals, the benefits of which are often underestimated by buyers: barley, pearl barley, millet and spelt. Her words are quoted on the Roskachestvo website.

Despite the benefits of each of the cereals, they have a number of contraindications. Thus, spelt, barley and pearl barley contain gluten, so they should not be eaten by those with celiac disease, the specialist noted.

She advises against eating barley during pregnancy, since dishes made from this cereal have diuretic properties.

Spelt is not recommended in the acute period of intestinal disorders, peptic ulcers and intestinal obstruction.

– Millet interferes with the absorption of iodine, so it is not recommended for use in diseases of the thyroid gland. It should also be removed from the diet in case of increased acidity of the stomach, ulcers and gastritis, kidney diseases, gout or calcification, – said Bessonova.

Pearl barley can cause excessive gas formation.

If we talk about the energy value of cereals, then the lowest-calorie is barley, it has only 76 kcal per 100 g of product. Bessonova advised introducing barley into the diet because of its “perfectly balanced composition in terms of KBZhU”.

Barley is the basis of pearl barley and barley. Pearl barley is peeled and polished high-quality barley grains. Barley groats are made by crushing barley grains, without grinding or polishing, which is why it contains so much fiber.
