Neurologist Restak: this strange behavior may be a sign of imminent dementia

Dementiais a progressive neurological disease that affects memory, thinking, orientation, understanding, mood and the ability to perform everyday tasks. It is often associated with Alzheimer's disease, but can also be caused by other causes, such as vascular disorders and other neurological conditions.

Dementia can greatly impact the lives of the patient and their loved ones. However, with support and care, as well as medical supervision, it is possible to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

The earlier support is provided, the greater the chance that the disease will develop slowly. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the “early warning signs.”

Dr. Richard Restak told the Mirror about a symptom that is usually not paid attention to. According to him, loved ones should be wary if a person suddenly begins to put things in the wrong place. For example, he puts a thing where, according to the laws of logic, it should not be: a toothbrush with forks, a saucepan with shoes.

In the victim’s mind, one can see: “I don’t understand where dishes or hygiene items should be stored, so I put them where I can see them.” This may indicate that irreversible processes have begun in the brain, especially if the behavior is repeated.

Signs of dementia may include:

1. Memory loss: forgetfulness, especially about recent events or important details.
2. Deterioration of cognitive functions: problems with thinking, problem solving, narrowing of the ability to analyze and plan.
3. Loss of orientation: difficulty determining place, time and situation.
4. Deterioration of speech and communication: difficulties in finding words, understanding and expressing thoughts.
5. Changes in mood and behavior: sleep disturbances, irritability, aggression, depression or apathy.
6. Decreased ability to perform daily tasks: problems with self-care, cooking, personal care and home care.
7. Decreased social activity: refusal to communicate with other people and participate in previously favorite activities and hobbies.
