Mycoplasma pneumonia outbreak linked to Russians' lack of attention to health

Russians do not pay enough attention to their health, and this is closely related to the surge in mycoplasma pneumonia, doctors say.

The spread of mycoplasma pneumonia is not something extraordinary, it has become more common among our compatriots – this trend can be observed over the past 20 years, said the former head of Rospotrebnadzor Gennady Onishchenko.

According to him, the widespread occurrence of pneumonia is partly explained by the seasonality and activation of respiratory infections (often the occurrence of pneumonia is a consequence of poorly treated, suffered on the feet or insufficiently treated acute respiratory viral infection). One of the most dangerous seasonal infections in terms of such risk is COVID-19.

Many doctors note that mycoplasma pneumonia is distinguished by its invisibility: at the initial stage, it does not cause a strong deterioration, does not give typical signs of pneumonia – it is often confused with a more routine ailment.

“Mycoplasma, which causes pneumonia, has been well studied. It affects not only the lungs, but also the heart and other organs. What is interesting about it is that it is a borderline infection between bacterial and viral. It cannot be neglected, it can start unnoticed and gradually flare up,” warned Doctor of Medical Sciences Nikolai Malyshev in a commentary for RTVI.
The outbreak of mycoplasma pneumonia is also associated with the lack of attention to health among Russians. Gennady Onishchenko said that his fellow citizens do not think enough about their health. Many Russians neglect medical examinations and vaccinations, carry respiratory infections on their feet, self-medicate, neglect bed rest and isolation when symptoms of illness appear.

Doctors remind that the causative agent of mycoplasma pneumonia is transmitted from person to person by airborne droplets.

Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote about the features of “silent” mycoplasma pneumonia.
