Gastroenterologist Panina: 150 ml of vodka or a liter of beer with shish kebab can lead to acute pancreatitis

Consumption of grilled meat in combination with alcohol can lead to serious health problems, such as acute pancreatitis. Gastroenterologist Natalya Panina spoke about this.

According to her, acute pancreatitis can develop when consuming 50-80 grams of pure ethanol.

— This is, for example, 150 ml of vodka, a little more than 1 liter of beer, half a bottle of wine. The higher the dose, the greater the risk of developing the disease, the specialist told Gazeta.Ru.

Why can this happen? Alcohol disrupts the blood supply to the pancreas and spasms the sphincters through which the gland and gallbladder secrete enzymes and bile. Enzymes and bile are actively secreted in response to the intake of fatty meat.

Due to the high concentration of enzymes and the inability to release them, damage to the cells of the pancreas itself occurs. Necrosis may even occur.

Alcohol containing gases (champagne, beer), mixed drinks, alcohol with a lot of sugar (fortified wines) is considered especially harmful, the doctor emphasized.

Symptoms of pancreatitis:

Pain in the upper abdomen. It is sometimes described as “dagger-like.” One of the main symptoms of pancreatitis is acute pain in the upper abdomen, which can spread to the back.

With pancreatitis, vomiting and nausea may occur, especially after eating. This is due to disruption of the normal functioning of the pancreas.

Loss of appetite and weight. Inflammation of the pancreas can lead to loss of appetite and sudden weight loss. This is due to disruption of normal digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Disturbance of bowel movements.

Inflammation of the pancreas can cause general fatigue and weakness associated with disruption of normal metabolism and digestion.
