Gastroenterologist Dilyara Lebedeva listed the signs of iron deficiency and explained why this condition is dangerous.

Signs of iron deficiency:

  • Iron is involved in the synthesis of hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen to organs and tissues. When it is deficient, tissues suffer from a lack of oxygen.

    Low iron levels lead to iron deficiency anemia. The result is fatigue, constant weakness, dizziness, memory impairment.

    Due to low iron levels, the level of physical activity decreases – the muscles lack oxygen.

    Lack of iron reduces the body's ability to fight infections and increases the risk of inflammation and colds.

    Iron is important for hair growth and strong nails.

    Several foods rich in iron:

    1. Red meat. Beef, lamb and pork contain high amounts of iron. The liver and kidneys are especially rich in it.

    2. Bird. Chicken and turkey are good sources of iron. The dark flesh of the bird is especially useful.

    3. Fish. Some types of fish, such as tuna, sardines and oysters, contain significant amounts of iron.

    4. Seafood. Shrimp, mussels and oysters are excellent sources of iron.

    5. Legumes. Lentils, beans, chickpeas and peas all contain high amounts of iron. They are also rich in protein and fiber.

    6. Nuts and seeds. Pumpkin seeds, cashews, almonds and walnuts contain some iron.

    7. Green vegetables. Spinach, broccoli, cabbage and potatoes contain iron, although its absorption may be worse than from animal products.
