Endocrinologist Pavlova: the risk of developing colorectal cancer is increased by the widespread “Western” diet

Endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova told what type of diet increases the risk of developing inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer – malignant tumors of the colon or rectum. Their cells can grow into surrounding tissues, spread throughout the body and form metastases.

Pavlova separately highlights the “Western” diet. This is when food contains a lot of fat and sugar. We are talking about fast food, fried meat, confectionery, dairy products, soda, etc.

“The review showed that such a diet provokes colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease,” the doctor noted in her blog.

Such food negatively affects the health of the microbiome because it contains too many fats and sugars when lack of fiber.

During the study, experts studied six popular diets and their effect on the intestinal microbiome.

  • Mediterranean: plant foods predominate ( vegetables, fruits) and healthy fats;
  • high in fiber;
  • vegetable;
  • high in protein;
  • ketogenic: high in fat, almost no carbohydrates;
  • western

The Mediterranean diet has been effective in treating cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and type 2 diabetes.

— If you want to please your microbiome (which is even involved in the functioning of the brain), then try “feeding” it pickled vegetables and sour milk. Just know when to stop, advises Pavlova.

The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age. Its classic symptoms are:

  • diarrhea,
  • constipation,
  • blood in stool,
  • abdominal pain,
  • unexplained weight loss,
  • fatigue
  • low iron levels.

List of allowed foods for the Mediterranean diet:

Fish (red and white).
Seafood: shrimp, mussels, squid, octopus.
Meat: lean varieties, veal, rabbit, poultry.
Vegetables: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, various types of cabbage, zucchini, eggplant, pumpkin, carrots.
Lettuce, greens.
Grains: rice, quinoa , oats, couscous.
