Doctor: protein deficiency during Lent can be dangerous for pensioners

Following the rules of Lent, people give up meat, dairy and eggs, that is, products containing animal proteins. According to geriatrician Marina Chernyaeva, for the older generation this is fraught with health problems.

If an elderly person decides to fast, he should take care of a balanced diet. You cannot thoughtlessly remove animal protein without replacing it with anything. Otherwise, an exacerbation of anemia and osteoporosis, kidney pathologies may occur.

– First of all, it is recommended to ensure sufficient protein intake from plant foods: legumes, nuts, seeds, various cereals, Chernyaeva told AGN “Moscow”.

To get complex carbohydrates, you should buy pasta made from durum flour, whole grain bread, and cereals. Vegetables and fruits will provide the necessary amount of fiber – you should eat at least 400 grams of them per day.

The expert advises taking vitamin and mineral complexes during fasting. It is especially important to pay attention to iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Protein deficiency in the body can manifest itself in various symptoms:

Loss muscle mass. Protein deficiency leads to loss of muscle mass and decreased strength.

Lack of protein can cause feelings of fatigue, weakness and general lethargy.

Slow wound healing. Protein plays an important role in the tissue healing process.

Edema. Protein helps maintain fluid balance in the body. Protein deficiency leads to swelling of the legs, arms, and abdomen.

Problems with the immune system. A lack of protein can lower immunity and increase the risk of infections.

A protein deficiency can lead to hair loss or weakening.

A lack of protein often causes dry, flaky, and irritated skin.
