Elevated cholesterol remains one of the manifestations of hypothyroidism. This was announced by doctor and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This can lead to a slower metabolism and various symptoms such as fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, decreased body temperature, dry skin, problems with memory and concentration, and menstrual irregularities in women.
Autoimmune thyroiditis – a very common disease, Myasnikov noted.
— Moreover, a lot of people have “latent” hypothyroidism: when thyroid hormones have been normal for years, but TSH (the pituitary hormone that regulates the thyroid gland) is elevated ( 4-10). And these people also have high cholesterol as a consequence of this hidden hypothyroidism, the doctor wrote in his blog.
Doctors prescribe statins to these patients and often see muscle weakness and pain as a side effect. The fact is that both statins and hypothyroidism can cause muscle discomfort, so the use of statins for hypothyroidism increases the risks of side effects, many times over.
— Practical conclusion: if you have high cholesterol, check your function thyroid gland (TSH),—recommends Myasnikov.
Elevated blood cholesterol levels may have no symptoms and are usually only detected during testing. But there are still symptoms.
1. Xanthomas. Yellow deposits of fat that can appear in various parts of the body, often around the eyes, elbows, knees or fingers.
2. Arterial hypertension. High cholesterol may be associated with high blood pressure, which can lead to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty breathing.
3. Sore throats. Some people with high cholesterol may experience chest pain or discomfort, which may be a sign of heart or blood vessel problems.
4. Xanthelasmas. These are yellow deposits of fat that can appear on the eyelids of the eyes and can be associated with high cholesterol.
