Doctor and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov reminded about the dangers of canned green peas. This was discussed on the air of the program “About the most important” on the channel “Russia 1”.

Canned food may contain a deadly toxin that provokes botulism.

— No one will give you any guarantees — not God, not the tsar, not the hero. None. The chance is small, but it exists, the doctor noted.

Myasnikov advised heating any canned food, since high temperatures destroy it.

Botulism is a serious disease, caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The main symptoms of botulism are:

  • Visual disturbances. Double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids.
  • General weakness, fatigue, difficulty moving.
  • Difficulty swallowing and chewing.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Muscle weakness, which can progress to paralysis.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Breath holding. In severe cases, there may be a risk of respiratory failure.

You can suspect the presence of botulinum toxin in canned food by the following signs:

  • Bulging packaging. If a can or bottle is bulging, this may indicate gas formation caused by bacterial growth.
  • Damaged packaging. Rust, dents, cracks or other damage indicate a breach of the seal.
  • An unpleasant odor when opening the can.
  • If the contents of the can have changed color, become cloudy or have an unusual texture, this may be a sign of spoilage.
  • The appearance of bubbles or foam when opening may indicate an active fermentation process.
  • If there are traces of liquid or mucus on the inside of the lid, this may also be an alarming sign.
