- brittle hair and nails,
- more serious symptoms – fractures.
To diagnose vitamin D deficiency, you should take a blood test, the doctor clarified.
More about the problem.
Vitamin D deficiency is a condition in which the level of vitamin D in the body is lower than normal. It plays an important role in maintaining health, and its deficiency can lead to various problems.
Causes of deficiency:
- Lack of sunlight. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet rays. People who spend little time in the sun, especially in winter, are at risk of deficiency.
- Poor nutrition. Lack of vitamin D in the diet, especially in vegetarians and vegans.
- Problems with absorption. Some diseases, such as celiac disease or liver disease, can make it difficult to absorb vitamin D.
- As we age, our skin becomes less efficient at synthesizing vitamin D.
Symptoms of deficiency:
- Fatigue and weakness.
- Bone and muscle pain, brittle bones.
- Problems with the immune system
- Depression.
Consequences:
- Osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency leads to decreased bone density and an increased risk of fractures.
- Rickets. In children, deficiency can cause rickets, a disease characterized by impaired bone mineralization.
