“It's useless”: doctors warn Russians against taking certain tests

A number of tests prescribed to patients are practically useless, this was reported by toxicologist Mikhail Kutushov and therapist Anton Shulaev.

Doctors Kutushov and Shulaev warned Russians against taking certain tests.

“Sometimes doctors prescribe tests that do not help in diagnosis and treatment,” toxicologist Mikhail Kutushov said on this matter.
In particular, he called the performance of a general blood test useless in cases where a person has obvious signs of infection. The doctor explained that in such circumstances, a specific test for the infectious agent is more relevant – this allows you to avoid prescribing antibiotics that may be ineffective for the patient.

Kutushov also advised avoiding the Nechiporenko urine test and instead conducting a bacteriological urine test.

The doctor added that radiography can also be useless.

“X-rays in the absence of strict indications can be dangerous for the patient. Sometimes doctors can prescribe it for preventive purposes, which is not recommended,” Kutushov emphasized.
Therapist and nephrologist Anton Shulaev, in turn, noted that a blood test for insulin, which is often prescribed to overweight patients, is ineffective. He explained that insulin levels often fluctuate, and a C-peptide test is much better suited to clarifying the content of this hormone in the blood.

Doctor Shulaev also pointed out other useless tests:

  • Test for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to assess thyroid function;
  • Coprogram – laboratory study of feces;
  • Blood test for vitamin D, prescribed to patients who do not have osteoporosis, kidney disease or parathyroid gland disease.
