In the United States, following Canada, an outbreak of listeriosis was declared. At least two people died and nearly three dozen were hospitalized.
Two people died in Illinois and New Jersey, the Centers for Disease Control reported. Authorities are investigating the causes of the outbreak.
It is already known that many of the sick people ate meat and sausages purchased in stores.
Canadian authorities previously announced an outbreak of listeriosis. Two people also died there. It was alleged that those infected drank soft drinks of plant origin.
Listeriosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
Transmission and symptoms.
Listeriosis can be spread through consumption of contaminated foods such as unpasteurized dairy products, cheeses, meats and seafood. Most people with listeriosis have no symptoms or mild symptoms, such as fever, muscle aches and headache.
However, in pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, listeriosis can cause more serious problems, including death.
Listeriosis can lead to various complications, including meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain), sepsis (a severe infectious condition) and fetal problems in pregnant women such as premature birth or stillbirth.
