Allergist Sycheva: incorrect use of an inhaler is one of the most common mistakes of asthmatics

man
Allergist-immunologist Elena Sycheva called incorrect use of an inhaler one of the most common mistakes in the treatment of asthma.

— Main errors when using metered-dose aerosol inhalers under pressure are associated with the need to coordinate inhalation and activation of the device,” the doctor noted.

She recommends using a spacer. This is a small reservoir that is intermediate between the inhaler and the respiratory tract. It allows you to introduce a larger amount of medicine into the lungs.

Errors during treatment with inhalers can be avoided if you use nebulizers, the specialist noted. They are still relevant in most hospitals and at home.

The second mistake is when the patient does not follow the doctor’s instructions. This is especially acute in adolescents, who may be embarrassed to perform inhalations in front of others or forget about it.

Almost all inhaled glucocorticosteroids should be used twice a day, the doctor emphasizes.

Other common mistakes: self-medication, underestimating the severity of asthma, using unproven treatment methods.

Let us recall the symptoms of bronchial asthma:

  • Shortness of breath. One of the most common symptoms of asthma: Wheezing in the chest. Patients experience whistling sounds or noises when breathing, especially during an attack or exacerbation of the disease.
  • A characteristic dry or irritating cough that may be worse at night or after physical activity.
  • Tightness or discomfort in the chest.
  • Symptoms worsen when exposed to triggers. For many people with asthma, symptoms may worsen when exposed to various triggers, such as allergens (dust, pollen, lint, pollen), cold air, respiratory tract infections, stress and physical activity.
