Gastroenterologist Timoschenko: bananas can harm people with kidney problems

Gastroenterologist Anastasia Timoshchenko told when bananas can be harmful.

Doctor Timoschenko said that bananas have a fairly high carbohydrate content, and as such they are a product useful for restoring strength and tone. But this fruit is also loaded with potassium, which may make it harmful for some people. In particular, the gastroenterologist warned, bananas can harm people with kidney problems. The kidneys are responsible for controlling potassium levels in the blood, and potassium-rich bananas can contribute to significant overload of this organ.

“Excessive consumption of bananas may adversely affect the health of patients with chronic kidney disease, those taking potassium-sparing diuretics or certain medications to reduce blood pressure,” said gastroenterologist Timoschenko in a comment to NEWS.ru.
The expert drew attention to the fact that bananas cannot be considered a product that can replace a meal. If you eat a banana on an empty stomach, this can cause a significant increase in sugar levels, and then insulin in the blood – such snacks provoke active fat deposition and an increased feeling of hunger.

Timoshchenko added that bananas contain fructans, which can cause unpleasant symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (for example, such as bloating or loose stools).

Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote about why it is useful to drink a little brine in hot weather.
