Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Fedosina spoke about foods that take a long time to digest – should they be present in the diet?
Foods that take a long time to digest can cause unfavorable processes in the gastrointestinal tract – for example, slow down intestinal peristalsis – and therefore provoke constipation. In particular, these include everything fried. Fried foods take a long time to digest and lead to intestinal stagnation, a doctor warned.
“Fatty and fried foods take the longest time to digest in the body. They put additional strain on the gastrointestinal tract and can cause constipation and stagnation in the intestines,” Fedosina said in a comment to Gazeta.Ru.
In addition, she added, foods that take a long time to digest in the intestines are fermented by bacteria, which results in excess gas formation, bloating, heaviness, heartburn and other uncomfortable conditions. Fedosina clarified that such foods may “require” the body to more actively release enzymes to break them down, but its resources may not be enough for such intensive work
“But this does not mean that you should completely give up slowly digestible foods. Some of them are food for beneficial intestinal bacteria that maintain a healthy balance of microflora,” the doctor warned.
Fedosina noted that such products also provide long-term satiety. The expert advised focusing on natural fresh food when choosing products.
