Doctor Bereznikov: what slows down metabolism and makes an adult gain weight

Dietitian Alexey Bereznikov: a slowdown in metabolism in adults may be associated with hormonal deficiency.

Doctor Bereznikov said that it slows down metabolism  in the body of an adult and causes him to gain weight. The specialist named endocrine disorders as one of the reasons for excess fat deposition – in particular, insufficient production of thyroid hormones.

“People can gain weight due to a hereditary tendency to be overweight, which is characterized by increased energy production from fat. Endocrinological diseases also affect weight gain – a deficiency of philotropic hormones or a deficiency of thyroid hormones C4,” Bereznikov clarified in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
The doctor added that the slowdown of metabolic processes in the body of adults can be caused by a lack of sex hormones, which is not related to food preferences. For example, a lack of testosterone, which is a good stimulator of metabolism and muscle growth. Also, men can have an excess of estrogens, which provokes specific obesity of the female type. In turn, women can gain weight due to a decrease in the production of estrogens in their bodies under the influence of age-related changes.

Despite this, the expert emphasized, most cases of excess weight in Russians are the result of unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Bereznikov advised Russians to walk more and actively engage in various household chores that require physical activity.

“Most Russians gain weight due to the wrong approach to diets and low physical activity. Metabolism speeds up in people who play sports, and, conversely, slows down in people who lead a sedentary lifestyle,” the specialist postulated.
