Vitamin D supplements can reduce cancer risk by 38%

From maintaining bone health to boosting the immune system, vitamin D plays a critical role in overall health. What's more, studies show that sunlight vitamin can even prevent cancer.

Vitamin D deprivation means that the risk of various diseases, including several types of cancer, increases. But can boosting the sunshine vitamin reduce the risk of a deadly disease?

“Scientists decided to investigate the relationship between cancer and vitamin D in a randomized trial. After studying 25,871 people, the research team instructed participants to take 2,000 international units (IU) of the vitamin per day. The participants in the study were aged 50 years or older, and at the time the study began they did not have cancer. The study focused on vitamin D3 supplementation, which describes the type of sunshine vitamin your skin produces when you expose it to sunlight. This is not the first study to look at the connection between the sunshine vitamin and cancer. Previous studies have shown that people with higher blood levels of vitamin D appear to have a lower risk of developing cancer. If you want to increase your dietary intake of vitamin D, good food sources include:

  • Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel)
