In an interview with neurologist Yulia Belkina, tips on how to help yourself with leg cramps. Here's what the medic recommends doing.

  • Try to relax the muscle.
  • Pull the sock towards you a few times (you can help yourself with your hands).
  • Prick the limb with a pin or toothpick.
  • Make a light massage of the spasmodic muscle.
  • Walk on the cool floor.
  • Lie down for a while with your legs elevated.

Belkina noticed that if the episodes of leg cramps become more frequent, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Cramps in the legs can “declare” various health problems.

“The causes of convulsive contractions of the muscles of the legs can be both physiological changes in the body, and serious diseases – a deficiency of minerals (magnesium or calcium), poisoning, venous insufficiency and varicose veins, anemia, diabetes mellitus,” Belkina informed.
