Doctors reported new clinical recommendations for taking vitamin D from the World Association of Endocrinologists.
Doctors invited to the filming of Elena Malysheva's program discussed the rules for taking vitamin D that are relevant today. Previously, it was believed that only people with certain problems and disorders in the body should take it. But now, as Malysheva noted, endocrinologists insist on the importance of vitamin D for all people, including healthy ones.
“This is not even one vitamin, but a complex of biologically active substrates, united under the general name of vitamin D. And everyone needs this vitamin, including healthy people,” said the doctor and TV presenter.
Explaining why this vitamin is needed, doctors listed the functions that can be normally carried out only with its sufficient intake into the body.
- Vitamin D helps bones form correctly;
- Maintains healthy functioning of the nervous system, brain;
- Promotes the correct functioning of the immune system, protecting the body from infections and cancer;
- Reduces the level of inflammation of the vascular wall, supports the work of the heart and blood vessels;
- Regulates the level of electrolytes, protecting against the occurrence of arrhythmia;
- Helps control the levels of calcium and testosterone, necessary for muscle development;
- Normalizes bowel function.
Why does vitamin D deficiency occur?For its production in the human body, the sun is necessary (specifically ultraviolet rays of class B). In clear weather, you can get the daily norm of vitamin by staying in the sun for about 20 minutes, but at the same time, about 25% of the body should be open (without clothes). In addition, for vitamin D to be synthesized by the body, you need to be physically active. In the fall and winter, it is no longer possible to get vitamin D in this way, there are too few necessary sunlight for this. Cloudiness, smog, glass also become an obstacle for them. People who are indoors, even in summer, may not get the important vitamin in the required amount.
How to get vitamin DFor example, from food. It is found mostly in cod liver; it is enough to eat only 4 grams of this product per day. Other sources are flounder, horse mackerel, herring, cod, salmon, halibut, or milk fortified with vitamin D.
You can also use supplements.
- From one year to 18 years old – the daily norm is 1200 IU;
- From 18 to 70 years – at least 600 IU;
- From 70 to 74 years – 800 IU;
- After 75 years – up to 900 IU;
- Pregnant women – 2500 IU;
- For people with obesity and prediabetes — up to 3,500 IU.
“According to the new recommendations, people aged 18 to 75 can take vitamin D prophylactically without measuring its blood levels. But it is still better to send patients for a preliminary analysis to know exactly what their indicators are,” Elena Malysheva shared her opinion.
