Endocrinologist Zarema Dzhatdoeva: you can eat candy and other sweets without fear of getting diabetes.

Endocrinologist Jatdoeva said that many people are mistaken when they associate the onset of diabetes with eating sweets. The presence of sweet treats on the menu does not cause diabetes, the doctor emphasized. What leads to the development of this disease is not that a person allows himself sweets or pastries, but systematic overeating, leading to an excess of calories in the daily menu and fat deposition.

“Many patients sincerely believe that it is cakes and pastries that are to blame for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, while a constant surplus of kilocalories plays a key role in the development of the disease,” the doctor told the NEWS.ru portal.
The specialist emphasized that diabetes (type 2) occurs primarily as a consequence of insulin resistance – a disorder that means that the body has ceased to adequately respond to insulin (the hormone responsible for the distribution of glucose into cells, released into the blood after eating food, not necessarily sweet). The appearance of insulin resistance is caused by constant overeating and the appearance of excess fatty tissue in the body.

“Insulin resistance leads to impaired carbohydrate metabolism and type 2 diabetes,” the expert stated.
Since eating sweets is not a direct cause of diabetes, you don’t have to give up the same sweets or chocolate, Jatdoeva added. But at the same time, it is important not to exceed the normalized daily amount of calories consumed, and also to ensure that the diet contains enough healthy foods containing vitamins and microelements. If sweets prevail in a person’s diet and there is a lack of healthy fortified food, this will negatively affect the body, even if he carefully monitors the amount of calories and is not overweight.
