Doctor Albina Rakhmatullina: sunstroke can be considered a type of heatstroke.
Doctor Rakhmatullina told what the difference is between heatstroke and sunstroke. The doctor explained: heatstroke means deterioration in health due to disturbances in the body caused by overheating. Such overheating occurs in conditions of high air temperatures, especially with high humidity.
“Sunstroke, in turn, is a type of heat stroke that occurs with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight on the head and neck,” Albina Rakhmatullina shared with Vechernyaya Moskva.
How do the symptoms of heat stroke and sunstroke differ?
The doctor pointed out the following manifestations of heat stroke:
- High body temperature;
- Dry and hot skin without sweat;
- Headache;
- Weakness;
- Dizziness;
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Increased heartbeat;
- Increased irritability;
- Convulsions;
- Confusion or loss of consciousness.
“The symptoms of sunstroke are the same, but additionally include redness of the skin and a burning sensation in the head, neck or other areas that have received a large amount of solar energy,” the specialist added.
Rakhmatullina emphasized that if there is a significant deterioration in health, the victim should be called ambulance. As first aid, it should be cooled by dousing it with water (not ice water) or wiping it with a wet cloth, and also give it something to drink.
