Doctor Myasnikov: Excess Vitamin D Can Be Dangerous for Heart and Kidney Function

Doctor Myasnikov: both vitamin D deficiency and its excess should be avoided; all extremes are dangerous for health.

In autumn and winter, the body may suffer from a lack of vitamin D – some negative symptoms may indicate the need for its intake.

Doctor Alexander Myasnikov reminded Russians that vitamin D is one of the most important substances necessary for the active functioning of the human body and maintaining good health, both physical and mental.

“Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining heart function and strengthening bones, helps in the fight against cancer cells, maintains normal body weight and protects the liver and kidneys from disease,” the famous doctor said.
He added that the human body is capable of synthesizing this substance on its own – when the skin is exposed to the sun and when consuming certain foods. In the cold season, its deficiency may be particularly severe, since the period of bright sun is sharply reduced and nutrition becomes unbalanced.

Doctor Myasnikov drew attention to the fact that vitamin D deficiency often manifests itself in physical pain: this can be either joint or muscle pain. In addition, increased fatigue, susceptibility to depression or apathy may be a signal of such a need.

But too much of the substance is also dangerous, the specialist warned. Excessive consumption of vitamin D (especially over a long period of time) can lead to calcium accumulation, which is fraught with the risk of problems with the heart and kidneys. Unpleasant manifestations of hypercalcemia (calcium accumulation) can include nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, excessive urination and dehydration, and the formation of kidney stones.
