Vrach Markova: Excess salt leads to problems with the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, nutritionist Strokov told which products contain a lot of salt

Nutritionist Ekaterina Markova in an interview with RIA Novosti shared the dangers associated with frequent consumption of foods with a high salt content.

“There are many opinions about the harm of salt. Some believe that salt is 'white death', while others argue that without salt the body cannot function normally due to its valuable components. The truth is that it is necessary to consume salt in moderation so as not to harm the body,” she explained.
Water containing sodium should also be taken into account. The concentration of sodium in it should not exceed 200 mg/l.

Failure to comply with this rule can lead to the following consequences:

Cardiovascular diseases

Excess sodium can deplete potassium reserves, which increases the risk of hypertension.

Memory impairment

Studies show that excessive salt consumption negatively affects brain function, impairing memory and concentration.

Calcium leaching

Sodium chloride leaches calcium and other electrolytes, which worsens the condition of bones, hair, teeth and nails.

Kidney problems

Salt retains water in the body, which overloads the kidneys, preventing them from performing their functions. This can lead to edema and the accumulation of toxins, causing inflammatory processes.

Gastrointestinal problems

Excessive salt consumption can contribute to the development of ulcers and gastritis, which, if left untreated, can develop into stomach or duodenal cancer.

Nutritionist Igor Strokov, especially for MedikForum, which foods contain the most salt.

“Foods that are high in salt include processed and fast foods like pizza, burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and French fries. They also include sausages and deli meats, including ham, bacon and salami. Canned foods like soups, vegetables, legumes and pickled items are also high in salt. Cheeses like feta, cheddar, parmesan and blue cheeses are high in salt,” says Strokov.

Sauces and condiments are also high in salt: soy sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup and mustard all contain significant amounts of salt. Snacks like chips, salted nuts, crackers and popcorn are also high in salt.

Frozen prepared meals like dumplings, lasagna and frozen soups are often high in salt. Bouillon cubes and ready-made soup mixes are also a source of large amounts of salt.
