Doctor Beleva: drinking water with meals can have positive and harmful effects

water consumption
Gastroenterologist Elvira Beleva spoke about the pros and cons of drinking water during meals.

Doctor Beleva informed that drinking water during meals can have positive and harmful effects. Positive effects include hydration of the body, as well as improved swallowing and mixing of food with digestive juices. In addition, water during meals is a kind of prevention of overeating: it creates a feeling of fullness in the stomach without additional calories.

Speaking about possible harmful consequences, Beleva pointed out the ability of water to dilute gastric juice, which can worsen digestion. In addition, increased heartburn may occur (especially if carbonated drinks are consumed).

Doctor Beleva added that there is a general rule for drinking water – it is best to do it half an hour before a meal or half an hour after a meal.

“You can follow the general rule: drink 30 minutes before a meal or 30-40 minutes after a meal . This time is enough not to interfere with the digestion process,” the gastroenterologist shared with UfaTime.ru.
For those who prefer to drink water with meals, the doctor recommended drinking liquid in moderation.

The MedikForum.ru portal previously wrote that the doctor Alexander Myasnikov said: the body does not need so much clean water every day.
