Can apple cider vinegar help with diabetes?

Apple cider vinegar is easy to buy in supermarkets, but how useful is this addition to salad dressing?

Accessible evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar may be beneficial for blood sugar levels, which is great news for diabetics. The researchers subjected five healthy subjects to six test meals. Dishes received at random consisted of 100 grams of chopped lettuce, either drizzled with olive oil, olive oil and vinegar, or olive oil, vinegar and baking soda.

In three cases, the test meals were followed by 50 g of white bread (causing a spike in blood sugar levels). Blood sugar (glucose) levels were measured before meals and 95 minutes after meals.

Little-known health benefits of apple cider vinegar are listed

Researchers noted thatthe reaction on glucose decreased by 31.4% when vinegar was taken orally.

This study has limitations. First, the sample size is tiny, so the results cannot be applied to a larger population. And secondly, trial meals were given to people who do not have type 2 diabetes.

“Getting rid of refined carbs and sugar is by far the most effective and healthiest way to manage your blood sugar levels. But drinking apple cider vinegar can also be helpful. Apple cider vinegar doesn't actually contain any vitamins or minerals other than very small amounts of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. However, it also contains amino acids and antioxidants,” says nutritionist Igor Strokov, especially for MedicForum.
