According to a new analysis published in The Lancet, alcohol is more harmful to the health of young people than the health of older people. This is the first study to report the risk of drinking alcohol by geographic region, age and gender.

The study also shows that adults aged 40 years and older without underlying medical conditions may benefit from some small amount of alcohol consumption (one to two standard drinks per day), including reduced risk of heart disease. -vascular disease, stroke and diabetes.

This suggests that global recommendations on alcohol use should be based on age and location, with the strongest recommendations targeting men between the ages of 15 and 39, who are most at risk for the harmful use of alcohol, regardless of country of residence.

Using estimates of alcohol use in 204 countries, researchers estimate that 1.34 billion people consumed harmful amounts of alcohol in 2020.

“Our message simple: young people should not drink, but older people may benefit from drinking in small amounts. While it is unrealistic to think that young people will abstain from alcohol, we believe it is important to report the latest data so that everyone can make informed decisions about their health,” said study senior author Dr. Health at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
