It is well known that victims of obesity and diabetes have an increased risk of severe coronavirus. But covid itself can cause the development of diabetes and the appearance of extra pounds.
Scientists from the University of Oregon are trying to figure out why diabetes and obesity threaten coronavirus victims among all other unpleasant consequences. There is a relationship between COVID-19 and metabolic diseases, which include both obesity and diabetes. A better and deeper understanding of these relationships will help develop different treatment and prevention options.
It is impossible to force feed children
It is well known that under certain conditions in our body, the risk of a severe form of coronavirus increases. But people who have been ill with coronavirus are more likely to experience these conditions even after recovery. These include kidney disease, heart failure, strokes, hair loss, and even impotence. And now the list includes obesity and diabetes.
Can coronavirus cause a stroke?
The studies will follow two groups of rhesus monkeys, and the first group will include lean animals, and the second – overweight. Both will be exposed to COVID-19. The scientists will then look to see if lean animals develop obesity and diabetes, if obese monkeys develop diabetes, or if they experience even greater weight gain. Particular attention will be paid to changes in the cells of the pancreas, which produces insulin to control blood sugar levels, as well as changes in adipose tissue, fats and sugars. (READ MORE)
