What are the signs of infection with gonorrhea – in men and women

girl
Gonorrhea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (after chlamydia). How to understand that a person has become infected?

In women, vaginal discharge may be liquid or watery, green or yellow. In men, they are white, yellow, or green.

When urinating, there is pain or a burning sensation in both men and women. In women, the lower abdomen may hurt, and menstruation is more painful. Blood may also appear after intercourse.

In men, there is pain or tenderness in the testicles, swelling of the foreskin.

Doctors admit that about one in 10 infected men and five out of 10 infected women will have no obvious symptoms at all.

A gonorrheal infection can also develop in the rectum, throat, or eyes, resulting in discomfort, pain, or discharge.

Gonorrhea can also be passed from mother to child during childbirth. In newborns, the infection will cause the eyes to become red and swollen, resulting in a thick, pus-like discharge.

Sex should be avoided until both partners have been treated.

The most common symptoms of gonorrhea in women are:

  • white, yellow, or purulent vaginal discharge;
  • pain in the lower abdomen;
  • burning during urination;
  • signs of conjunctivitis;
  • sore throat;
  • intermenstrual bleeding;
  • swelling of the vulva;
  • fatigue.
