Therapist Amir Khan said that fatigue can be a symptom of type 2 diabetes. He explained why this happens.
The doctor noted in a conversation with Surrey Live that all the patients with diabetes who came to see him complained of fatigue. With elevated blood sugar levels, the body cannot release energy from sugars and gets it from protein and fat reserves. They are harder to break down and they don't give as much strength. That's how fatigue occurs.
Classic symptoms of type 2 diabetes:
1. Frequent urination, especially at night.
2. Constant thirst.
3. Fatigue and weakness. The body's impaired processing of sugar can lead to poor energy and make you feel tired and weak.
4. Increased appetite, constantly feeling hungry.
5. Slow wound healing.
6. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause vision problems, such as blurred or decreased vision.
How to prevent type 2 diabetes?
- Weight control. Being overweight and obese are major risk factors. Losing even 5-10% of your weight can significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes.
- Balanced diet. Eat a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
- Reduce your intake of sugary drinks, baked goods, and foods high in added sugar.
- Watch your portion sizes to avoid overeating.
- Regular physical activity. This could be walking, running, swimming, playing sports or fitness.
- Including strength training 2-3 times a week helps strengthen muscles and improve metabolism.
- Smoking increases the risk of diabetes and other diseases.
- Chronic stress can affect blood sugar levels.
