The incidence of post-COVID syndrome has passed the peak

The incidence of post-COVID syndrome has passed the peak
In some countries, the incidence of post-COVID syndrome has begun to decline, which means that the so-called peak has been passed here. This, in particular, is evidenced by data from the UK Office for National Statistics.

The number of people complaining of symptoms of post-COVID syndrome in the UK has decreased for the first time this year. This is happening against the background of the rapid spread of moderate strains of the Omicron virus and a small increase in the number of cases. 3% of the general population retained symptoms of post-COVID syndrome for at least 4 weeks after getting rid of the initial infection in June. This corresponds to approximately 2 million people. And in May this number was 3.1%.

Vaccination protects against protracted covid

The Office for National Statistics also calculated that the number of people who have been battling symptoms of post-COVID syndrome for at least a year has also dropped from 826,000 to 807,000 for the first time. Previous studies have suggested that the Omicron strain is half as likely to provoke post-COVID syndrome as its predecessor, the Delta variant. Omicron more often causes a moderate course of coronavirus infection, because of this, the risk of patients suffering a severe illness or dying is reduced.

Concerns about the long-term effects of coronavirus on the body of those who seem to have recovered from it appeared among doctors during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. Then it was found that the post-COVID syndrome can last for weeks and months, it forces people to take sick leave, as they experience incredible suffering. And this, in theory, can provoke very serious economic consequences for a number of states. (READ MORE) Office of National Statistics
