Surgeon Albitsky: Deep vein thrombosis can develop without symptoms. What to pay attention to?

legs
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a pathological condition associated with impaired blood flow in the veins. This occurs due to the formation of blood clots and blockage of the lumen of blood vessels.

DVT is considered an emergency that requires immediate assistance. Vascular surgeon and phlebologist Alexander Albitsky spoke about the symptoms of this condition.

— Painful sensations in the area of venous blockage. Local swelling of the limb. Increased body temperature. Seals in the direction of blood flow in the vessel,— the doctor noted.

According to him, patients note an increase in these symptoms over several days.

In some cases, the disease develops almost without symptoms, manifesting itself only in swelling, the specialist warned. Therefore, they should not be ignored.

If, with the increase in swelling and increased pain, chest pain, fever or coughing fits appear, call an ambulance. Otherwise, there is a risk of a blood clot breaking off and blocking the blood vessels of the lungs.

Let's recall the main causes of leg swelling:

Fluid retention. This can be caused by poor diet, high salt intake, or not drinking enough fluids.

Vein problems. Varicose veins and venous insufficiency cause blood and fluid to accumulate in the legs.

Heart failure. If the heart cannot pump blood effectively, it leads to swelling, especially in the lower extremities.

Kidney problems. Kidney disease can disrupt the fluid balance in the body, which also causes swelling.

Liver problems. Cirrhosis and other liver diseases can affect the protein levels in the blood and cause swelling.

Bruises, sprains, or fractures can lead to localized swelling.

Pregnancy. Changes in hormonal levels and pressure on veins.

Some medications, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants, and anti-inflammatory drugs, can cause fluid retention.
