Study: Highest diabetes risk associated with exposure to bright light between 12:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

The highest risk of developing type 2 diabetes was associated with exposure to bright light from 00:30 to 6:00, scientists reported. Endocrinologist Zuhra Pavlova spoke about the study in her blog.

Light at night disrupts circadian rhythms and affects insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. Scientists analyzed data from 85 thousand people and 13 million hours of recordings from special devices. 

Volunteers who did not have type 2 diabetes wore light sensors on their wrists for a period of time. Their condition was then monitored for nine years.

The level of illumination during the day did not affect the indicators, unlike at night, as already mentioned, from 00:30 to 6:00. The difference in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes between people with bright and dark nights was similar to the difference in patients with low and moderate genetic risk of developing the chronic disease.

You need to sleep at night, Pavlova emphasized. 

The risk of diabetes increases precisely because of the disruption of circadian rhythms, and bright light at night is essentially a sign that we are not sleeping, she noted.
