Pulmonologist Beketov: Mycoplasma pneumonia can cause complications in the heart, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract

There is a significant increase in pneumonia cases in Russia. Earlier, MedikForum wrote that children in the Russian region are getting dangerous pneumonia without the usual symptoms.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, one of the main reasons for this phenomenon is mycoplasma bacteria.

Community-acquired mycoplasma pneumonia is difficult to distinguish from other types of this disease, noted Vladimir Beketov, a candidate of medical sciences and pulmonologist.

— In the early stages, in the first 5 days of the disease, this is almost impossible. The fact is that with COVID-19, and with some other type of viral infection, and with mycoplasma pneumonia, there may be no wheezing in the lungs, the doctor told KP.

That is, the doctor may not hear significant sound manifestations of the disease. This greatly complicates diagnosis.

The immune system responds to mycoplasma with severe inflammation. Changes can occur not only in the lungs, but also in other organs.

— Mycoplasma pneumonia can cause complications in the heart, kidneys, and intestines due to immune mechanisms and intoxication,— the specialist emphasized.

This is not typical for bacterial lung lesions, so such pneumonia can be confused with viral infections. In most cases, you need to do not even an X-ray of the lungs, but a computed tomography (CT) scan to see the changes.

Mycoplasma pneumonia (atypical) is an infectious lung disease caused by microorganisms of the genus Mycoplasma. They do not have a cell wall, so they can only exist in the cells of the host organism.

Classic symptoms of pneumonia:

  • Cough.
  • Fever.
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain.
