Popular foods that increase the risk of bowel cancer by 30%, but only in men

According to a study conducted by scientists from Harvard University, regular consumption of certain foods increases the risk of colorectal cancer by almost 30 percent.

It is curious that such a relationship was found only in men.

Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumor of the large intestine. It goes without symptoms for a long time, and then they appear:

  • weakness,
  • malaise,
  • loss of appetite,
  • abdominal pain,
  • dyspepsia,
  • flatulence,
  • intestinal disorders,
  • intestinal obstruction.

According to experts, men who choose ultra-processed foods for themselves have a sharp increase in the risk of colorectal cancer – as already noted, by almost 30 percent.

Study published in the journal BMJ. More than 200,000 people over 25 years old took part in it.

Each of the participants filled out a questionnaire in which they wrote how often they eat foods from the provided list – it had 130 items. The researchers tracked the health status of the volunteers and then identified which of them had colorectal cancer. The observation lasted for several years.

“We have found a clear link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and the development of this type of cancer. Colorectal cancer may be one disease that is particularly affected by daily diet, said study lead author Dr. Lu Wang.

At risk were those who constantly ate sausage, bacon, ham and sausages. Processed meat with additives is the strongest risk factor for colorectal cancer, scientists emphasize.

They are, among other things, high in sugar and low in fiber, which contributes to the development of obesity, and obesity is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer.

Researchers note that these foods affect women's health differently. Their cancer risks are neutralized by fermented milk products, such as yogurt, which they eat, compared to men, quite often.

Early signs of colorectal cancer

  • bleeding during bowel movements,
  • mucus in the stool,
  • feeling of a foreign body in the anus,
  • defecation disorders.

In the presence of metastases, ascites, an increase in the size of the liver and lymph nodes are observed.

  • weakness, fatigue;
  • lack of appetite, aversion to meat food:
  • unreasonable drastic weight loss;
  • stool instability (diarrhea alternates with constipation);
  • impurities in the feces (blood, mucus, pus);
  • subfebrile body temperature;
  • aching or cramping stomach pains.
